200 Million Years in the Making It is estimated that the rock has been balancing for at least 200 years. Generation after generation of Island residents have visited the rock. In the past the balancing rock was only a locally known landmark -isolated but uniquely fascinating. The Balancing Rock Trail began in 1992 when the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism used a picture of the relatively unknown balancing rock on the cover of the Doers and Dreamers tourism guide. That year the Balancing Rock became a tourist attraction; however, the Tiverton Board of Trade had a problem, as there was no developed trail. Access to the balancing rock was very difficult and treacherous. So in 1995, the Board of Trade with help from Growth Opportunities, ACOA (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) and Provincial Tourism began a two-stage development project to create a trail to the Balancing Rock. The trail was an overnight success adding an important attraction to the Island’s tourism experience. Businesses on the Islands noticed that visitors were staying longer and spending more money. In 1996, the second stage was completed adding washrooms and a large parking lot at the trail’s entrance. Today, the Balancing Rock Trail attracts over 10,000 visitors a year and is becoming one of the province’s top tourist attractions. If you have not seen this natural wonder, check it out!
